Correctional Healthcare Education: Bridging Health Equity Inside Correctional FacilitiesCorrectional Healthcare Education: Bridging Health Equity Inside Correctional FacilitiesCorrectional Healthcare Education: Bridging Health Equity Inside Correctional Facilities

Health education within US correctional facilities plays a vital role in addressing the needs of the incarcerated population. By focusing on correctional facilities education, these programs aim to promote health equity and improve the overall well-being of inmates. Through various public health initiatives, we can help ensure that individuals in these settings receive the necessary resources and knowledge to lead healthier lives.

    About Us

MidWest ProHealth Initiative is a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization committed to closing the public health gap within correctional facilities. We operate at the intersection of healthcare, health equity, and corrections to ensure that the incarcerated population receives vital correctional facilities education, access to evidence-based health education, disease management support, and preventive care through our public health initiatives.

    Our Mission

To empower individuals and communities through evidence-based public health initiatives focused on health education, particularly in correctional facilities education and among underserved populations, with a primary emphasis on achieving health equity for the incarcerated population.

    Our Vision

In the Midwest, and ultimately across the nation, we strive for a society where every individual, regardless of their background, housing status, or legal history, has equitable access to health education and care. This includes essential public health initiatives aimed at the incarcerated population, ensuring that those in correctional facilities receive the health education necessary to promote health equity.

    Our Values

    Health Equity

Health education is a human right, not a privilege. Our work starts and ends with this commitment.

    Community-Centered

We build trust inside facilities and communities before programming — relationships come first.

    Trauma-Informed

We recognize lived experiences and apply trauma-informed principles across all programming.

    Dignity First

Every individual is engaged with respect and without judgment. Incarceration does not reduce a person’s humanity.

    Evidence-Based

Programs grounded in peer-reviewed science and aligned with federal public health frameworks.

    CORE AREAS

    Pillar 1

Health literacy and education play a crucial role in correctional facilities education by equipping the incarcerated population with the knowledge necessary to understand, manage, and advocate for their own health. This foundation is essential for sustaining clinical interventions post-release and advancing health equity through effective public health initiatives.

    Pillar 2

Chronic Disease Management in correctional facilities education involves structured support for the most prevalent chronic conditions affecting the incarcerated population. By integrating health education, we can enhance health equity and promote effective public health initiatives tailored to this unique demographic.

    Pillar 3

Reentry Health Continuity is essential for bridging the critical gap between release from correctional facilities and community care. By connecting the incarcerated population to primary care providers, pharmacy services, insurance enrollment, and mental health support before they leave the facility, we enhance health education and promote health equity. These efforts are vital components of public health initiatives aimed at improving overall well-being.

Ready to Bring Health Education to Your Facility?

We collaborate with county jails, state correctional departments, juvenile facilities, and community corrections to enhance correctional facilities education. Together, we can develop public health initiatives focused on health education and health equity for the incarcerated population.
